Upcoming Broadway Plays


Many people are not fond of the Broadway musical shows. Those who enjoy more traditional theater are often disappointed in the number of Broadway plays that are musicals. However, there are always several plays to choose from for the traditional theater lover. Coming up in 2008 are some great new plays that are sure to satisfy your entertainment itch.

Of course, January and February are great times to see other Broadway plays that have debuted within the last year. August: Orange County is well worthy of the time of any traditional theater lover. Is He Dead? a long lost play written by Mark Twain, is a comedic smash hit. Other plays that have debuted within the last year that are worth seeing at least once include the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a play full of comedy and tears that follows a group of youngsters in the throws of puberty. The Homecoming has also been receiving rave reviews, as this revival of the 1965 play is well performed and uniquely portrays the betrayal and satire of the original script.

January and February will bring a number of new Broadway plays to the stage. One of the plays debuting in January is The 39 Steps, a comedy adapted from the Hitchcock book and film. This Broadway play is sure to be a crowd pleaser, with hilarity, dangerous stunts, and suspense, all wrapped up into a beautifully written, directed, and performed masterpiece. Another of these plays is November, which is set just before a presidential election. The play includes many current hot topics, and is sure to be somewhat comical. Come Back, Little Sheba is a play about the emptiness of a marriage, and how one single person can make or break a relationship. This play will be sure to imitate life, and elicit strong emotions and memories in many viewers.

One of the Broadway plays making their debut in Spring 2008 is Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which is a dark comedy placed in pre-revolutionary France. This play has everything that traditional theater lovers adore, including betrayal, comedy, and seduction. Le Liaisons Dangereuses is said to have done a marvelous job portraying the cynic and decadent lives of the French aristocracy of that time. Finally, spring will see the return of one of the greatest plays, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. This new production of the Tennessee Williams play is the first with an African American cast. For traditional theater lovers, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is one of the plays at Broadway that you will not want to miss.

Theater tickets for most of these upcoming plays are already available. Preview showings for the winter season Broadway plays are also available. The only play coming in Spring of 2008 that does not have theater tickets available as yet is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which is not set to start its preview event showing until mid-February.
