There are a few brand new Broadway shows. The Homecoming is the newest play on Broadway, still in its preview showing. It is about the homecoming of a brother and his seductive wife, who causes no small amount of mayhem. Is He Dead? is a newly produced play originally written by Mark Twain, and Legally Blonde has made its way from the big screen to a debut in New York.
The New York critics have been especially kind to several current Broadway shows. A new play, August: Osage County provides great entertainment while taking you from laughter to tears. Rock 'n' Roll is another critic's pick, an uncharacteristically sentimental new play from Tom Stoppard. The Seafarer, which provides laughter and tears as you follow four drunken Irish brothers. Spring Awakening brings back the mystery of sex as it follows a group of teenagers in 19th century Germany. Finally, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is nothing like you have ever seen.
Current Broadway shows that the critics hate include Curtains, The Farnsworth Invention, and Young Frankenstein. Curtains is a behind the scenes look at a 50's musical. The Farnsworth Invention is a dry play that relates the invention of television. Finally, Young Frankenstein is described as loud and obnoxious. Of course, current Broadway shows always hold a few classic musicals. Chicago may be too new to call a classic, but earned its place in this category. A Chorus Line has had a remarkable revival. Grease will not be a favorite, as the cast was picked from a reality show. However, Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera continue their runs, enchanting audiences new and old. Let us not forget the spoofs and hilarity! Montey Python's Spamalot is still going strong and will have you rolling in the aisles. Avenue Q is a spoof of Sesame Street, trading children for college students. And, of course, Hairspray is just as popular as its counterpart. Broadway never leaves out the children, either. Do not forget to stuff those stockings with theater tickets to the shows currently at Broadway like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Mary Poppins. Of course, Broadway shows cannot run forever. Some older Broadway Musicals you may want to see include The Color Purple, The Drowsy Chaperone, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, Rent, and Wicked. None of these are getting rave reviews, so get your theater tickets while you can. Current Broadway shows that are due to close include A Bronx Tale (a New York classic), Cymbeline, and Cyrano de Bergerac. Cymbeline, Shakespeare's most unpopular play, has not had the best reviews.
